Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park

Johnston Canyon has always been one of my favorite hikes.  It is a deep gorge, withe many waterfalls and dense forestation, and can go as far as you like.  It goes to the ink pots (about 7 miles) then on to Mystic Pass and beyond.  We chose to make the trek to the pots. Steep uphill for several miles but well worth the hike. The first sections of the pathway is partially suspended and/or otherwise connected to the canyon walls.

Lower Falls.  This is the turn-around pooint for 90% of the tourists.  Very little foot traffic beyond as the trail rapidly steepens.

Had to capture this . . a little forest growing deep down the canyon wall:

The ink pots were beautiful.  They are natural springs that have been bubbling up for millions of years.  The sand at the bottom is so fine it has become quicksand.  The water temperature is 39 degrees, year round.

If you look closely, you can see thee sand in the background bubbling up . . . (Cathy was balancing on a rock, just a little apprehensive.)
