St Mary, Montana

Distance from Sundance was about 325 miles.  The last 45 miles were on a very narrow, two lane road.  I should have realized it was not going to be easy when there were signs warning motorcycles of the rough pavement and my Garmin (set to truck routes) warned me.  Nevertheless, we forged ahead.  Came across a lot of range cattle, sometimes having to come to a stop and use the horn to get them off the roadway. They usually met us on blind curves.  A couple of calves ran alongside us for a short while, with Cathy keeping a watchful eye to ensure that they did not get in front of the coach.  Burned the brakes on the 6% grade descending into St. Mary (forgot to use the engine brake).

We are parked about one mile from “Going-to-the Sun Road”, at the east entrance to Glacier National Park.  That is one of their famous red coaches entering the campground behind us:

Went for a short hike . . . along a cliff overlooking Going-to-the-Sun Road.  Pretty narrow going for the first quarter-mile or so.

Things got a little dicey when he/she decided to join us.  Luckily, we got it to turn around, there was not enough room for all of us:

Saw some more bighorn sheep on the trail. I know they all look the same but they are still kinda neat. Got a little too close to one and it started snorting and shaking its head at me. I backed off pretty quickly . . .

Some views from the trail.  Note the sheer drop off to the road (the trail is the narrow horizontal streak 2/3 up from the bottom):

We saw our first grizzly this morning.  Unfortunately, I only had my 17mm wide-angle lens as we were our way to a waterfall. Plan on getting a lot closer at the trip goes on .

It has been raining every evening with thunderstorms here. If the wind dies down , we may go up Going-to-the-Sun for some late afternoon waterfall shots.
