Alaska 2025 – 23

Before we left Homer, I walked down to the edge of the campground and took several photos of the bay.

We stopped at a pullover on the Sterling Highway and took one last photo of Mt. Redoubt, across Cook Inlet.

After traveling through Soldotna, we stopped in Cooper Landing and took several photos of Tern Lake. This is probably one of our favorite photography stops in the trip. The salmon spawn here and a state salmon hatchery is just upstream.

We took a ride down the Seward Highway to see some areas that we had not previously visited, including this historic site near Potter’s Marsh, just south of Anchorage. This is the working end of a train operated snow blower. This site was once home to a small crew of Alaska Railroad workers who maintained the tracks between Seward and Anchorage in the days of coal and steam-powered locomotives.

I always seem to find the library. This time a double-header!

Looking across the tracks it is obvious the tide is out in Turnagain Arm.

This is McHugh Falls, in the McHugh Creek Picnic Area. You can catch the McHugh Creek Trail which connects with the Turnagain Arm Trail. These trails (mostly paved) follow the shoreline and extend to Girdwood.

According to a store employee, this is literally the smallest Safeway store in the US. They were off-loading a supply truck here and every aisle was crowded with supplies. You could not use a shopping cart here as the aisles are too narrow. Small, but highly profitable, the employee said it is the highest $ per square foot in the Safeway chain.

We stopped at Windy Point to see the mountain goats we had previously spotted, but, because we had the camera ready this time, they were hiding (and probably laughing at us).

Damn, not another library!
