While waiting for our tour of the Apostle Islands we drove a little out of town to the State Fish Hatchery. After walking the exhibits and the grounds we walked to the holding ponds and viewed the larger trout. We had to be very careful where we walked as there were a flock of geese in the area! I was neat watching the mother goose take care of the little ones.

We saw this bee house in Washburn, a nearby town. We stopped at the nearby Forest Service facility to find out some of the details on bee home building but their “expert” was out in the field. The lady directed us to a local who farms the bees but due to road construction we could not find his home.
After driving around Washburn, we ended up at a very deceiving used bookstore. From the front it looked old and dusty but once inside in was on multiple levels with shelves at least ten feet high. I spent the better part of an hour on a rolling ladder looking through the “Alaska” section which was as large any any such section to date, including the Alaskan bookstores. I even picked up an embossed local brick from a planter outside (with permission form the owner of course)!

This is one of the larger homes on a corner entering Bayfield. There were many of these size homes facing the lake.
Our Apostle Islands Cruise:
We made it to our cruise departure time and I took about a hundred photos of the islands, eagles, lighthouses, etc. What I didn’t do was properly eject my storage card from my computer and thus failed to capture any of the photos. We passed Madeline, Basswood, Hermit, Stockton, Manitou, Otter, Rocky and Devils Islands on the way out and Bear, Raspberry Oak and Basswood (other side) on the return. Believe me the non-existant pictures would have been great! We saw the lighthouses on Devils and Raspberry Islands, the quarry on Hermit, the bald eagles (in flight and on trees) on Basswood, and the fish camps on Manitou.
(Blank space for about 100 pictures)
