This is their first time to Haines.A black and white photo taken from our downtown campground.I took a late afternoon ride on my motorcycle and captured Haines and Fort William H. Seward.Cathy at the Ax’ Shtudultoowo Daaka Hidi totem, aka the “Library Totem”. The name for this totem is Tlingit for “Where they go to learn by themselves”. The pole was carved from a straight-grained 800 year old cedar and was an eight year collaboration between the Chilkoot Indian Association and the Haines Borough Public Library. This totem took the designer/head carver Jim Heaton plus three Klukwan carvers and three apprentices four months to complete. The Klukwan settlement is between Haines and the International border.Lupines were in full bloom and covered the roadsides. The people from the Expedition Cruise were easy to spot in the red jackets.
