For our last day in Maine, we drove North to a less visited, remote section of Arcadia National Park, about 40 miles from Mount Desert. We passed through Sullivan where we took this photo, looking out to Frenchman Bay.

We spent about an hour in the town of Winter Harbor and went to a preview of a silent auction to be held this Saturday. The auction is being held in a very old concert hall type of theater. We were amazed at the facility and we talked with the two ladies about some of the donated items to be auctioned. There was an antique folding desk that was previously used in the local post office and a very nice antique compact desk. Both were in superb condition with no restoration work. There was also a Nikon 600mm f4 lens with a carbon fiber hood (minimum bid $3,500) with the original invoice for $11,750. The owner passed away last year and her husband donated the item; incredible value but we will be in New Brunswick at gavel time. I asked about the four speakers on the stage; apparently they were donated to the town by the widow of Paul Klispch. They were LaScala models and we would have liked to have heard them.
We crossed over a bridge entering the park and stopped by this floating dock.

I walked back to the bridge and saw the tide coming through. There is a lot of tidal movement when you get north and the current here could have been fun if you were allowed to tie off to the bridge… hmmm

On to the “beaches”, just a little pebbly…

Cathy did not want to get too close to the edge. There is a very steep drop off in the water.

A view from the southern facing side of the park…

These waves were more prevalent on the northern side…
Here is my hand held panorama of the view at the northern facing side. There is a lobster boat retrieving traps at the cliff line across the waterway:

I got a little too close on this wave. The water in the foreground engulfed the rock I was standing on. The tide was coming in so we called it quits at this location after this photo…

On the way back to the car, we saw this pea soup in the rocks. Pretty neat color but would not want to step in it…

Approaching Birch Harbor, we saw some flowers in bloom so we stopped and walked down to the edge of the water to spend a few minutes.

We took a back road into Prospect Harbor, a small lobster boat harbor. They were off- loading a catch while I was taking a couple of photos.

This area is called “Tidal Falls” and it is really a set of rapids caused by the extreme tides, both rising and falling. There was a tremendous amount of current here as you can see from the whitewater by the rocks. This is an incoming tide. This area is protected by the Frenchman Bay Conservancy.
