Memorial Day in Georgia

What a way to start Memorial Weekend!  Sunrise in the North Georgia Mountains . .

We participated in the 12K Trail run at Yonah Vineyards.  There were more than 200 runners at the start.  We arrived early to allow Jason to run in the one mile event prior to the 6K and 12K runs.

This is the view from the starting line.  We ran in, around and over all of the hills and vineyards in these pictures.  You really have to wind around to make up the distance!  Up and down the hills, row to row in the vinyards (some on slide slopes which can be challenging on wet grass), then into the woods for several miles so you can stumble in the rocks and roots, misc. holes (mostly marked), streams, and more, really steep hills.

Jason finished his mile run, and was at the truck when we passed by on our run.  This was about mile 1.5 of my 12K.

This is the uphill finish.  We had just run the paths between the vines behind me about three miles ago.  You can see the worn uphill path directly above me. . .

Exhausted and resting (me that is)…

Jason found a friend to play with while waiting for me.

On Memorial Day we took Jason to a parade in Dacula.  He likes the tractors, cars and…

the horses.  This is one of four that were part of a Wells Fargo Stage exhibit. He had no issues getting up and personal with the horses.

Oops, he figured out that he was not going to watching the parade, but actually participating in it!  We walked with the Fallen Heros of Georgia, with portraits of local soldiers that were KIA in the recent middle east conflicts.  We were the first group in the parade,  led by 80 Gold Star families, which are in the background, behind Cathy.  There were 260 of us with similar memorials to local heros.

The crowd was impressive for the entire length of the parade, sometimes eight to ten deep on the sidelines.  We had two low flyovers by a C-130, a four engine propeller aircraft, but I was too busy looking and forgot to take a picture.

We returned home by lunch time and grilled hotdogs and Italian sausage for lunch.  What a day!
