Fishing the Kenai . . . after season ends

We stopped by a fishing supplier to get information about the fishing on the Kenai in Soldotna.  They told me that fishing was all but over and they had all of their supplies at 40% off for the season.  We bought a few lures and decided to try our luck anyway.  We went down to the water at about 1100 and came back to camp mid day with these:

Michael was first to catch one, a silver about 26 inches and 7 or so pounds.

Since Michael was using my heavier rod and reel, I went to my ultralight rod and reel and caught one also.  It took me a little longer to land this since I was using 6 pound test in the swift Kenai.  It really worked the drag on the tiny reel.  Pretty cool sound as the salmon was running downriver . . .

The next morning, Cathy and I went upstream on the Kenai and we caught two rainbows, using our fly rods for the first time, both at about 16 inches.  Big for me but very small by Alaska standards.  Little buggers really fought well in the swift water.  although they met the limit of 16 inches for keeping, we released both (you cannot keep any trout longer than 16 inches on this section of the river). We spent the day before setting up the trout beads and they were catching large silvers on nymphs near us.  We may go back tomorrow with the correct equipment.  This is a learning process for us as we are both new to fly fishing
