Waterton Lakes National Park, AB

It rains every night in the Rockies, usually accompanied by lightning and thunder.  And wind . . . wind like you can’t imagine.  Reminds me of the Mariah scene from the movie “Paint Your Wagon”.  The wind comes down the canyon with a ferocity that will blow you down.  Today, we decided to take a trip 50 miles north to Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta.  Had the pleasure of crossing the international border twice, once going north and once going south. A view of the road leading to the border. We did manage to see a brown bear and two cubs cross the road in front of us.  We only saw glimpses as they moved into the underbrush very quickly.  I got out of the car to try to get a picture and started heading into the brush before senses took over.  Don’t want to be a statistic.  Lot of range cattle on the road.  Warned by the US Customs agent that if we hit one, it becomes a million dollar prize steer (all were on the Blackfoot reservation, funny, heard the same about the horses on the Crow reservation).

This is the International border.  Notice the clear-cut line through the forest . . Not quite a wall.  It extends in both directions.

We had lunch at the Prince of Wales resort, which is on a peninsula extending into Upper Waterton Lake.  The meal was fantastic as was the view.  Cathy had Shepard’s Pie and I had the fish and chips.  Most of the wait staff were foreign exchange students, which is typical of the railroad level inns which we have visited. (Grand Teton Lodge, Yellowstone Inn, Many Glacier Lodge, etc.).

Tough to get a good shot of the actual resort.  This does not do it justice.  Mid day sun with 40 mph winds . . .

After lunch, we visited the Waterton Village.  Quaint, resort type town, main street absolutely lined with huge flower baskets.  Many shops, restaurants, lodges, and our favorite . . a bookstore!

Walked to Cameron Falls, just a short distance from town center.  This is a feeder river for Upper Waterton Lake.

Saw this pair of young’uns on the walk.  Mother was nearby with not a very watchful eye:

Will be heading  back to the Canadian border this weekend on our way to Calgary, then Banff. Eh?
