Race to the start . . .

Our goal was to “officially” start our Alaska trip in South Dakota.  To accomplish that we left Braselton at 1000 stopping at Costco in Buford for some last minute supplies.  Leaving Buford at 1200 on Thursday, we expected smooth travel through Atlanta.  That was not to be – accidents and road construction backed up I-85, then both 285 AND I75 were backed up due to construction.  We did make 580 miles before stopping for fuel and a little sleep at a truck stop near Paducah, KY.  Leaving Paducah, we traveled, basically nonstop to about 20 miles this side of the South Dakota border.  (Memo to self: when travelling over a holiday weekend, make reservations!)   We did find space with electrical hookups in the Winnebago’s Casino Resort in Iowa, operated by the Winnebago (no kidding) tribe. Mileage on day 2 was 585.  Travelling up to 65 mph fully loaded, we averaged 9.2 mpg.  Lucked into a space at a KOA (Campgrounds of America) in Midland, SD Saturday evening as we do not have “preplanned” reservations until July 6th, in Spearfish, SD.  From that point on, we do have every campsite reserved. Because we are two days ahead of schedule, we are now able to slow down and start enjoying the trip (350 miles today).

Visited the St. Joseph’s Indian School and Akta Lakota (Sioux) Museum & Cultural Center in Chamberlain, SD (thanks for the recommendation, Roger!) which was well worth the time. Picked up a book “Lakota Noon” described as the Indian narrative of Custer’s defeat.  Will read this before we visit the Little Big Horn Battlefield in Montana, for a different perspective.

Added to our agenda:  the Badlands, the Wounded Knee massacre site and Custer State Park, which were not in our original travel plans.
